Perhaps due to his young (demonic) age, Howl struggles to retain a consistent body. The broad strokes of his appearance remain the same, but his visible age and the details of his body tend to be shifty. He is sometimes seen with strange markings on his skin and fluctuates in weight.

Currently
Mr. Howl arrived in Never the way a meteor falls from the sky. That is to be taken entirely literally. 700 years of groveling in Hell at the feet of his demonic overlords finally resulted in a promotion and catapulted the former Crusader Godfrey into infernal un-life on Earth. Little memory of his human life remains, and Mr. Howl, whose demon name is the result of a bureaucratic error, is left to his own devices in figuring out how the shtick works. He is not even certain why he ended up in Never. Someone must have summoned him, possibly accidentally.For now, Never’s most clueless demon haunts the periphery of the town and resorts to begging and stealing to survive.

Personality
Howl is presently mostly the product of damnation, of escaping hell by means of licking the boots of his jailors. Therefore, he is either aggressive or pathetic in manner, frequently grovels and submits, and hides his cunning under a guise of abjectness.As a mortal, he was capricious and he still is. There is more to him than his worst facets, however, and his deeper personality may emerge over time:
- sensitive, astute and spirited; always looking for the perfect emotional state
- he is very clingy and glues onto people who permit it. He is frequently seductive and inappropriate
- instinct-driven with highly developed pattern recognition and the ability to zero in on a person's weak point, but also to recognize their skill and value
- abundant in zest and energy, driven to accumulate shinies like a magpie
- deep struggle with blending into community, but deep longing to belong somewhere
- thrives on crisis and chaos, will push trough all adversity if it suits him
Background
History
Mr. Howl is the lowest form of demon, one that did not enter into creation as an entity but as a common human. He was born around 1060 in Saxony and was known throughout his mortal life as Godfrey the Red — a lesser-known cousin of Godfrey of Bouillon, who etched his name into history as the preeminent leader of the First Crusade.Godfrey the Red is long forgotten; he served a lower rank under his famous cousin and was feared for his capricious temper and cruelty. Under the mantle of holy conquest, he committed countless atrocities. Upon dying of an infected tooth during the assault on the port of Akkā, he awoke in Hell. Imagine his surprise!
For the next 700 years, Godfrey descended through the circles of Hell, never tiring of trying to ingratiate himself to his demonic lords. He was finally permitted entrance to the Mill of Asmodeus, where the souls of unrepentant sinners are ground down to dust, from which a low demonic lifeform is formed and baked in an infernal oven.
Godfrey emerged as a lesser Ifrit, a pathetic imp-like creature with wings, about the size of a medium dog. Of his former identity, only fragments remain.
Every demon has a name assigned, and Godfrey, due to an error where his surname and title got switched up during processing, is eternally bound to the moniker "Mr. (firstname) Howl (lastname)."
Almost immediately after his reincarnation, someone incorrectly summoned him, resulting in his crash landing in the outskirts of Never, New Mexico.
Set free from his containment, Howl is learning how to navigate demon life. He does remember the basics of being a human, but — well, his current situation is hardly the same. Most of his personality is informed by the time he spent in Hell, since his term in damnation far outlasts the 40-year span of his mortal life. Howl has gathered a well of occult information in serving superior infernals but has yet to find an opportunity to take advantage of that.
For now, life is exhilarating and overwhelming, and compared to his seasoned brethren, who easily live among society, he is feral and unpredictable.
